Playground Proms returns to Lancashire bringing classical music to schools

Lancashire schoolchildren are in for a musical treat this week as Playground Proms, a nationwide initiative bringing live classical music to playgrounds, returns to the county next week as part of its biggest UK tour to date.

Founded by comedy string quartet Graffiti Classics in 2021, Playground Proms was born from a desire to keep music alive during the pandemic. Since then, it has grown rapidly, delighting nearly 50,000 children across the UK and Ireland with its blend of musical virtuosity and humour.

This year’s tour, supported by Arts Council England, spans 32 weeks and includes 15 stops across nine regions. In Lancashire, performances are scheduled in Preston, Poulton-le-Fylde, Leyland, Thornton-Cleveleys, Accrington, Burnley, and Bolton from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 June.

Local schools taking part include St. Patrick’s RC in Walton-le-Dale, Preesall Carter's Charity in Poulton, Samlesbury Church of England School, and Woodlea Junior School in Leyland, among others.

The workshops, aimed at primary pupils, are high-energy and interactive, designed to spark creativity and foster a love for classical music. Children learn about rhythm, conducting, and composition—and even get to perform alongside the quartet in a special anthem written in class ahead of the visit.

With plans to reach over 73,000 children by 2025, Playground Proms continues to prove that classical music belongs not just in concert halls—but in schoolyards, too.
