Next week the Olivier Award-winning rock musical is at the Grand in Blackpool before landing at Manchester’s Palace Theatre the following week, 14 years after its last UK tour.

Inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest and packed with rock ‘n’ roll classics, it features a cast of actor-musicians, a mad scientist, a green-tentacled monster and a roller-skating robot – so what’s not to like?

Return to the Forbidden Planet opened at the West End’s Cambridge Theatre in September 1989, where it ran for more than 1,500 performances and picked up the 1990 Olivier Award for Best Musical. The original design team return to recreate their award-winning original production, helmed by creator Bob Carton, who directed the West End production and now returns to direct this tour.
