Dave, aka One Man and His Beard, penned the number to celebrate the British tennis idol becoming a triple champion at the Olympics, US Open and Wimbledon.

He’s a Winner was given its first live airing at the Lowther Pavilion in Lytham at the weekend, when One Man and His Beard performed along with Blackpool’s Jess Harwood and 16-year-old April Keen.

“I think it could be my best ever,” said Dave. “I think it could be a winner.”

The new number, adapted from Dave’s song We are the Winners, which he wrote in anticipation of the England football team winning the World Cup, contains lines like: “Now he’s finally done it; now he’s finally won it.”

There is also the verse: “And it’s taken many years of hard endeavour, when many shot selections weren’t too clever. But we always knew that one day he would win, though people always nodded and gave us little sly grins!”

One Man and His Beard first started performing with his guitar 20 years ago, but only really made his mark nationally when he performed in front of BBC Broadcasting House in 2010 in the final Save6Music protest gig.

Earlier this year, he was championing the library service and played at 10 Lancashire branches in one day, featuring his song We Need Libraries.

His work was featured on the BBC Radio 4 documentary The Library Returns.

Among other works by the singer/songwriter from Brindle near Chorley are Preston Guild and Save The Bees.

“I enjoy watching tennis, in fact at its best there isn’t a more exciting, edge-of-your-seat sport,” said Dave. “When Andy won Wimbledon it was one of those magic moments and I thought it needed a song.

“I’d done We Are The Winners three years ago in the hope the England football team would win the World Cup – what a lunatic idea that was! So I started playing around with it and realised it didn’t need much tinkering. I put keyboards on it instead of guitar and that was it.”

Dave will be filming a video to go with the song on Monday at the Lowther Pavilion.

He is also planning to put out a video next February for another library tour.

He said: “I’m passionate about the campaign to save libraries and I’ll be doing some gigs to back that.”
