Hubby and I have been hearing good things about Coco’s Soul Food on Friargate, which serves Caribbean and Mexican food. It has already amassed a great reputation and is always near the top of Tripadviser reviews.

Despite meaning to try Coco’s, we still haven’t got around to it, so when we heard the company had a separate venture called Coco’s Express, on New Hall Lane, which deals with takeaways and delivery, we thought it was the perfect opportunity.

We ordered online and were off to a great start when our bag of food was delivered promptly at the given time.

Wanting a true Caribbean experience, we ordered Jamaican Jerk Chicken, a boneless quarter of chicken marinated and toasted in a special spicy sauce. It cost £5.50 and for an extra £1, you add a side of your choice and we went for Coco’s red skin chips.

For our other main we chose Jamaican Curried Goat (£6.50), with a side of Coco’s Jamaican rice.

As we thought the food might be too spicy for our nine-year-old twins, we ordered them a Seafood Delight pizza to share (£6.50), which was described as marinated mixed seafood, prawns, garlic, chilli, mozzarella and spicy tomato.

We started off with freshly made chicken nachos to share (£5.50). These looked a bit of a mangled mess when we opened the container – but they tasted wonderful.

Crispy nachos had a lovely chicken filling and came topped with melted cheese and salsa with side pots of sour cream, guacamole and jalapenos.

When it came to the mains, any worries Hubby and I had about the food being too spicy for our children went out of the window. They tried everything, ignoring their pizza in favour of guzzling our food instead!

The Jamaican Jerk Chicken was delicious, the meat succulent, the marinade and sauce an absolute delight.

The red skin fries, twice fried and seasoned, were a perfect accompaniment.

The classic Caribbean curried goat was incredibly flavoursome and the meat was moist and tender. The rich flavour was marvellous with the tasty Jamaican rice.

We did try a slice each of the pizza and, although it was great, in comparison to all the other spicy delights, it seemed a bit ordinary and most of it was saved for the following day.
