Future of town's bonfire night celebrations is 'in doubt'

Members of Garstang Lions community group are hosting their annual bonfire night at High Street car park, Garstang, this Saturday at 7pm.

But there are concerns over the car park’s future as it is part of a potential redevelopment of Garstang Business and Community Centre.

The redevelopment - by Blackpool-based Keyworker Homes - would partially demolish the centre and see a replacement three-storey complex, including retail units and flats, built.

Garstang Lions president, David Lewis, said: “There’s a bit of ambiguity about what’s going to happen. Because of this we don’t know what’s going to happen next year.

“If this is our last show then let’s go out with a bang.”

Speaking to the Post, Keyworker Homes said that the redevelopment of the site would account for major town events.

Managing Director of Keyworker Homes, Eian Bailey, said: “There is no intention of restricting the use of the car park and have agreed with Wyre Council that main Garstang planned events such as bonfire and fireworks will be factored into any construction programme.

“Whilst the event in 2018 may see some limited disruption, we see no reason why the event would not go ahead with adequate parking as usual and for many years to come.

“Keyworker have, and will continue, to work with all stakeholders before, during and after the development takes place.”

The bonfire and fireworks night in Garstang is now in its 14th year under the Lions management, which uses the event to help give something back to the community.

The last 12 months has seen the group, which was founded in 1971, give almost Â£12,000 in donations to various projects in the community.

David Lewis said: “We just get on with it and do what we can.”
