Even better than my mum’s roast

I’d normally argue that you can’t beat a homemade Sunday roast.

But I was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong during my first visit to Malthouse Farm in Whittle-le-Woods.

I’d heard a lot of good things about the place, and soon realised just how popular it was when we were told there was a 30-minute wait for a table when we dropped in on Sunday.

We took a seat in the bar area and had chance to look through the large menu before we were escorted to our table after only 10 minutes.

I’d already decided what to have (slow cooked pork belly with mashed potato, red cabbage, a sweet baked apple and a red wine sauce), but was then presented with the specials menu, and the Sunday Best offering - so it was back to square one.

It turns out they did a pimped-up version of the pork belly on the Sunday menu (£11.99).

Quoting the menu, it comes with “homemade goose fat roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding and seasonal vegetables, with gravy made with juices from the roast meats”.

And I can honestly say it was the best Sunday dinner I’ve ever had. The portion was more than generous, as was the amount of gravy, and the roasties and Yorkshire pud were perfect and soft.

The pork was juicy and succulent topped with a layer of melt-in-the-mouth fat , but there was certainly more meat than fat.

My partner and I had equally enjoyed our breaded whitebait starters (£4.79 each), with a chunky homemade tartar sauce.

And he tucked into a sea bass and scallop risotto for his main choice, served with prawns, peas and chives (£13.49), which was prounced delicious.
