The ENO is widely regarded as the world’s leading producer of Britten’s operas and it was here that Peter Grimes was first premiered almost 70 years ago, in 1945.

The opera contains some of the most evocative music ever written, with the wildness of the sea and instability of Peter’s mind superbly reflected in Britten’s powerful score.

Alongside the searing psychological drama, intrigue and suspense, it is little wonder that Peter Grimes has come to be regarded as among of British composer Britten’s finest works.

Broadcast in multi-camera HD, the story centres on a small coastal fishing village in Suffolk.

Fisherman Peter Grimes’ apprentice disappears at sea and the townsfolk begin to wonder what actually happened to the boy?

Was Peter Grimes involved? He is questioned in court but no charges are brought against him.

But the villagers remain suspicious of Grimes and believe him to be responsible for the boy’s disappearance.

Subjected to a hate campaign, Peter’s state of mind and behaviour becomes increasingly unstable.
