Don’t stop the carnival

Competition was fierce for the privilege of leading the carnival parade in its 40th anniversary year.

Artists and carnival troupes have been working through the night at the carnival workshops at Oyston Mill to make their costumes ready.

After one of a close-run competitions, the winners were announced to a roar of approval from their supporters.

Isles in Harmony King Keith Powell and Queen Julia Russell won by a narrow margin, followed closely by joint second placed Spectrum Association and Rainbow Association.

Ablaze Youth Group came a close third.

The Caribbean Carnival will take to the road this Sunday.

It leaves Moor Park at noon to wind its way through the city centre.

Carnival chairman Michael Dawkins said: “We have pulled out all the stops for our 40th anniversary and we are inviting everyone from the community of Preston and beyond to come along and celebrate.

“There will be not only a spectacular parade but much more family-orientated activities on Moor Park from noon including children’s arts, acoustic entertainment and great acts on the main stage.

“And, of course there will be some amazing food.”
