Dick’s cultural shock & awe

And the reformed band brings its show to the intimate surroundings of The Continental, Preston, tomorrow (Tuesday, October 15), with guests on the night Autonomads, a DIY dub-punk and ska band from Manchester, and Mayhem Freak, a punk’n’roll combo last seen at The Continental supporting Eddie & the Hot Rods.

Culture Shock were formed in Warminster, Wiltshire, in 1986 by Lucas after his time in Subhumans, and over the next four years played hundreds of gigs, including a lot of free festival appearances, releasing three studio albums on Bluurg Records.

The band’s lyrics concerned social and political issues, from cruelty to animals, Northern Ireland, war and social alienation, favouring a positive and empowering perspective.

The band split at the end of 1989, Lucas going on to form Citizen Fish with the bassist on Culture Shock’s final album and two other former Subhumans.
