A tough night at St Mary's for PNE

Preston North End take on Southampton away from home in the Championship tonight.

It’s a rearranged fixture for Ryan Lowe’s side, after the early March meeting was postponed - on the day - due to a nearby fire. North End’s squad and supporters travelled down to the south coast, but had to head home - with the game postponed a few hours before kick-off. It’s now the 43rd game of the season, for both teams.

Free coach travel has been put on for PNE fans - courtesy of Sky Bet’s ‘For The Fans’ initiative. It looks as though Preston’s play-off push is over, after defeat to Norwich City - at Deepdale - last weekend. Nonetheless, Lowe and co will be targeting a strong finish to the season and as high a finish as possible - having already matched last season’s points tally of 63. As for Southampton, automatic promotion remains on the cards - so North End are in for a tricky test no doubt.

HT: Southampton 3-0 PNE

It’s surely game over, already, at St Mary’s. Che Adams scored the first two goals and Stuart Armstrong curled home number three.

PNE negotiated the first 10 minutes or so, but it ended up being a brutal first half. Southampton have also hit the post. Frokjaer with the one real chance for North End. His low effort, at 0-0, was saved.

Holmes makes way for Cunningham. Brady has gone to right wing-back and Hughes left wing-back.

Armstrong’s low, left-footed drive cannons off the post.

34' GOAL! Southampton 3-0 PNE

Holmes kicks it straight to S. Armstrong on the edge of the box and he curls home.

32' Nobody gets there (2-0)

Brady clips an inviting free kick in from a central position but nobody in yellow can get on the end of it and the ball bounces over Hughes’ head, for a goal kick.

31' Another close one (2-0)

Brady gives it away in his own half and Adams goes for the spectacular this time. It’s only just over Woodman’s crossbar, again.

30' GOAL! Southampton 2-0 PNE

A quick give-and-go on the edge of PNE’s box sees Adams get through and he’s never missing. It’s blasted into the bottom right corner for Saints’ second.

26' Audacious effort (1-0)

Armstrong is 40 yards out, on the left, and fizzes a lofted effort at goal. Freddie Woodman looked caught out and will have been mightily relieved to see it just clear his crossbar. That would’ve been an incredible goal.

20' Poor from PNE's point of view (1-0)

Armstrong has picked up some dangerous positions out on that left. He’s allowed to drill the ball in and Adams ghosts in to apply the finish. Nor Hughes or Lindsay were anywhere near him.

GOAL! Southampton 1-0 PNE

Adams slots home from Armstrong’s low delivery.
