Plans for the development on the former government offices site at the junction of Liverpool Road and Cop Lane have now been passed by South Ribble Council.

The project could bring in around 160 jobs to the area and be worth, say Tesco, up to £1.6m a year to the local economy.

“We welcome the planning committee’s decision to approve our proposals and I’d like to thank residents for contributing their views throughout the process,” said Mark Thomas, Tesco’s corporate affairs manager for the North .

“It was heartening to see the support we’ve received from residents in Penwortham, for whom the plans will deliver much improved choice, free parking, a convenient place to shop and the rejuvenation of a vacant site. This is a vote of confidence in Penwortham and South Ribble.”
