I'm on the hunt for Preston's best pepperoni pizza... I want tasty, fresh, and value for money

Pizza. It’s one of the world’s most popular foods. It’s cooked pretty much everywhere on the planet and comes in various shapes and sizes, from closed-up calzones to thick-crusted deep dish pies. It can feature any number of topping combinations, from your standard mozzarella and tomato sauce to fruit, BBQ sauce, and seafood. The humble pizza does it all.

Loads of places claim to do the best pizza. New York swears it’s taken the classic Italian recipes and refined them into an artform. New-fangled fusion chefs in Tokyo reckon they’ve gone a step further. Traditionalists never stray far from Naples. But how do Preston’s pizza pies stack up in comparison? That’s what we’re here to find out.

Welcome to season three of Lancashire Post Eats, our video food review series finding the very best of everything culinary across the city. We’ve crowned Preston’s top kebab and hailed the best hamburger in our previous two seasons, so now we’re out to pick Preston’s premier pizza. It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.

As with our first two seasons, I shall be picking 10 of Preston’s best-rated and most popular pizza joints, trying them for myself, and rating each pizza out of 25 with a total score based on five categories - dough, sauce & cheese, toppings, vibe in the restaurant or takeaway, and value for money - graded from 0-5.

To try and make each pizza as comparable as possible, I’ll be going for the basic pepperoni pizza each time as that offers a good barometer of a place’s skills when it comes to all things pizza. I’m looking for light dough, I’m hoping to avoid hard bases. I’m after rich sauce and creamy mozzarella, not tinned tomatoes and bland cheese. I want proper spicy pepperoni, not a few sorry discs of flavourless meat. And I want it in a cool setting for a good price.

So tune in next week when we try our first place. In the meantime, don’t be shy about reaching out - we want to hear where you think does the best pizza in Preston and we want your recommendations for slices not to be missed. Because, as Dean Martin says, when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.
