Preston's week in court: people from Preston, Ingol, Ashton, Fulwood and Ribbleton convicted of crimes by the city's magistrates during the week of March 20

Every week, Preston Magistrates Court releases the names and details of people who have been convicted and sentenced over crimes they have committed in the Preston and central Lancashire area. The details of these offences are also included in the data.

• Stuart Campbell, 42, Alexandra Street, Preston: sent to Stacey Davis an electronic communication, namely text messages which conveyed a threat for the purpose of causing distress or anxiety; without lawful excuse, damaged Front Flat window to the value of 200.00 belonging to Stacey Davis - six month community order with alcohol treatment requirement, £120 fine, £114 surcharge, £85 costs.
• Gerald Thomas Jordan, 55, Hennel Lane, Walton le Dale: when suspected of having driven a vehicle and having been required to provide a specimen of blood failed without reasonable excuse to do so - banned from driving for 14 months, £162 fine, £65 surcharge, £85 costs.

• Rosie Stewart, 29, Sheffield Drive, Lea, Preston: at Bowness-on-Windermere in the county of Cumbria, assaulted David Jordan Walker, thereby occasioning him, actual bodily harm - committed to prison for 24 weeks suspended for 18 months, £500 compensation, £154 surcharge, £85 costs.
• Sean Patrick Mooney, 33, Halstead Road, Brookfield, Preston: driving after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in your breath, namely 47 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeded the prescribed limit - £538 fine, £215 surcharge, £85 costs, disqualified from driving for 12 months.

• Danielle Jones, 36, Canberra Way, Warton, Preston: committed fraud in that you dishonestly made a false representation, namely using a debit card belonging to another, intending to make a gain - 12 month community order, £40 fine, £90 surcharge.
• Chelsea McManus, 30, Callon Street, Preston: when suspected of having driven a vehicle and having been required to provide a breath specimen failed without reasonable excuse to do so - £200 fine, £80 surcharge, £85 costs.
• Patrick Joseph Doran, 27, Whitmore Place, Ribbleton: when the proportion of a controlled drug, namely Benzoylecgonine, in your blood, namely 476, per litre of blood exceeded the specified limit - £120 fine, £48 surcharge, £85 costs, disqualified from driving for 15 months.

• Gary Cornwall, 33, Lambert Road, Ribbleton: drove a motor vehicle on a road, namely Ribbleton Lane, when you were using a hand-held mobile telephone - disqualified from driving for 12 months, £220 fine, £88 surcharge, £90 costs.
• Jolene Maughan, 26, Geoffrey Street, Preston: stole items, to the value of £555.70, belonging to Tesco - two month curfew order, £114 surcharge, £85 costs.

Why do people appear at Magistrates Court instead of Crown Court?

The vast majority of offences are dealt with at magistrates court, with only the most serious offences, such murder and rape, being heard at Crown Court in front of a judge. Magistrates and district judges deal most others, including minor offences such as motoring offences, minor criminal damage and common assault not causing significant injury.

They will also deal with more serious offences such a burglary and drug offences but will then pass the case to a higher court should they feel they do not have sufficient sentencing powers. Magistrates will also pass the serious – or indictable – offences such as murder, rape, other serious sexual offences, kidnapping and serious fraud, to the Crown Court, where judges have much greater sentencing powers and cases are heard before a jury.
