Entering an inflatable pit filled with 1,500 litres of the brown stuff, Trevor beat opponents such as The Potato Masher, Guardian of the Gravy, and the Gravy Ninja, to make it through to the grand final at The Rose ‘n Bowl pub in Bacup, east Lancashire, on Monday.

And he made light work of Connor McGravy to be named World Gravy Wrestling Champion after wowing judges with his energetic display and showmanship.

“All in all, it was really bizarre but ultimately good fun,” Trevor said yesterday.

“There was around 100 spectators and families on the day enjoying it all.

“The emphasis was on entering and having fun rather than wrestling ability, which I don’t have.“I did try a few wrestling moves and I think the judges awarded a few points for that.

“This was my third year and it’s growing every single year. We are getting competitors all the way from America.”

Trevor dressed as Russell Crowe’s Maximus from the 2000 Ridley Scott film Gladiator, and had gravy poured over his head as he was named winner.

But he said: “It’s not something I would like to have on my Sunday roast!

“It was not the best gravy in the world!”
