We asked the wedding team at Eaves Hall to put together their best advice on planning a winter wedding, which is often a fraction of the price of a summer do.

The venue

If you are considering a winter date, choosing an appropriate venue should be the top of your to-do list. Although most will be able to cater to a seasonal event, only a select few will go the extra mile to sprinkle some wintry wonder into your December do.

Think real roaring fires, candles, fairy lights and cosy bedrooms for guests who are staying the night. Take advantage of the earlier evenings by watching the sunset, or even see in an evening of dancing with a dazzling firework display.

Winter warmers

Keeping your guests fed and warm during a winter wedding can also be an opportunity to put a personal stamp on your event. Greet them with something special like mulled wine or even Baileys hot chocolate on arrival to kick the celebrations off. Everyone will have an appetite in the depths of winter, so make the most of the season by choosing a hearty, seasonal meal and warming drinks throughout.

There are very few rules with a seasonal event. Choose what works for you and your venue; hand out scarves and blankets to keep guests snug, provide your bridesmaids with cover-ups or choose a wedding dress with long sleeves to hold off the winter chill.

Colour palettes

Colour schemes could involve sparkling silver and glittering gold, or dark purples and reds, or something else entirely – a December wedding certainly doesn't have to be all white or festive themed.

Weather ready

Unpredictable weather is every happy couple's worst nightmare, but by choosing to hold your event in December, you're already one step ahead of the game. Assume the worst and plan for the photos to take place indoors. If it does rain, your plans won't be disrupted, but if it snows, your location could be transformed into a winter wonderland.
