Petition to '˜save the Guild Wheel' goes to Preston Town Hall

The Save Our Guild Wheel Campaign, chaired by Peter Ward, has now collected more than 10,000 signatures, mostly from local people and important area groups.

Keen cyclists, walkers and many local residents claim that planned housing developments will carve up the Guild Wheel route and create dangers for users.

The move came as council leader Coun Peter Rankin successfully proposed a notice of motion to the council confirming that it would “continue its support for the iconic and popular Preston Guild Wheel and its legacy.”

Coun Rankin was proposing that “the safety of cyclists and pedestrians is afforded the highest priority where new developments and their access roads may turn new developments and their access roads in the short term into busier roads, with cyclists and pedestrians sharing space with construction traffic.”

The Save Our Guild Wheel Campaign has written to all Preston councillors urging them to support their stance and oppose “dangerous” junctions which could be created around the Wheel route with new developments.

The group said: “We ask all councillors to ask for a short delay for county to listen to public concerns.

“That you request LCC has a top-level meeting soon with local, experienced lay members, who are normally consulted, on these matters.”

The Group said failure to act would be neglecting the safety, health and pleasure of tens of thousands of families, friends and neighbours who use the Guild Wheel.
