Preston quiz champion is named '˜Sikh Mastermind' after tense TV final

A PRESTON man is celebrating after being crowned a satellite TV channel's 'Sikh Mastermind'.

Nirmal Singh, of Fulwood, is well-known figure in the North West Sikh community.

He beat all other contestants in a televised show with a similar format to the famous BBC Mastermind show.

The retired strategic development manager of Lancashire County Council’s Adult and Communities Services was delighted to take the title ahead of a total of 16 qualifying contestants.

The father-of-two said: “I was persuaded by my family and friends to take part.

“It really tested me – I had to prepare properly.

“The final was before a live audience and it was was very nerve-racking.

“Sometimes your mind goes blank and simple questions seem difficult.”

Nirmal won a trophy and a trip for two on a European holiday.

Programme presenter Avtar Singh Missionary said: “The process for setting the syllabus and questions for each stage of the programme was quite complex to ensure equality in the level of knowledge required to participate in the programme and to move forward from one stage to another.

“All the participants demonstrated that they possessed very high knowledge of the Sikh scriptures, Sikh religion, Sikh history and general knowledge – but Nirmal Singh shone out to be the true Sikh mastermind of 2016.”

Channel chairman Davinder Singh Bal said: “I whole heartedly congratulate Mr Nirmal Singh on his well-deserved achievement.”

Sikh Mastermind is on the Sikh Channel, a satellite TV channel, on Fridays at 8pm.
