Love him or loathe him James Last had a distinctive style which spanned decades of successful music recording and live performances – with more la la chorus lines than a Carpenters hit and a sound that swung between schmaltz and sheer entertainment.
Now the Mike James Orchestra and Singers In The Style of Last is out - well, Last at the Marine Hall, Fleetwood, on Friday, June 3, tickets £15.
James Last sold 200m albums worldwide in his lifetime and was the second best ever charting artist after Elvis Presley. He called his trademark sound Happy long before others came along with songs of that title – and deployed big band arrangements of well known tunes to make him the most commercially successful bandleader of the second half of the 20th century, even leaving the likes of Bert Kaemphfert, who again cultivated a definitive swing sound, in his wake.
The Mike James Orchestra sets out to recreate that era and even throws in a Last-like version of Nessun Dorma, Star Wars and James Bond.
Your mind may be boggling but your feet will probably be tapping.
