Preston bus station voted one of the top 10 best designed in the world

The list has been compiled by architecture website Design Curial and features bus stations and bus stops from around the globe, including a Gaudi-inspired mosaic bus station in Georgia, a wooden structure in rural Austria and a futuristic orange building in the Netherlands.

Preston’s famous 1960s Brutalist bus station, designed by architects BDP, is number 10 on the list.

Design Curial reporter Katherine Houston said: “The building features an elegant and effective design on the exterior of each car park floor, and as one of the largest bus stations in Western Europe, can hold 1,100 cars and 80 double decker buses.”

She added: “Bus shelters are such an everyday object that it is easy to overlook or stroll right past them, but these striking designs beg to differ. Encompassing everything from giant chairs to leaf-like shapes, curling waves of mosaic to simply the classics, we’ve revised our 2015 list to give you the world’s 10 best designed bus stations for 2016.

“Be it a bus stop, shelter or station, we’ve searched all corners of the globe to compile our ranking of the best.”
