George Formby – The War Years: 1939-45 will explore Formby’s time with the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA), when he performed to members of the British Expeditionary Force.

Mr Atkinson said: “I would be honoured to hear from former personnel – or their families – who served in World War II, that have memories of George Formby.

“It was extremely dangerous for Formby in his task to entertain the troops – near to the German front line – having to crawl into the trenches.

“Visiting the front line bridges Formby performed many shows – standing beside sandbagged built walls – in preparation to jump down into a slit trench, in case of coming under enemy fire.”

Formby performed in the ENSA show Let the People Sing, and starred in the 1940 film Let George Do It! which boosted civilian morale.

He also set up charities with his wife Beryl, and gave free performances to raise money.
