But hardened festival-goers were determined to soak up the fun swapping their sandals and T-shirts for coats and umbrellas to enjoy the 49th parade.

More than 70 children were involved in the three Royal floats to celebrate this year’s nuptials of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

St Michael’s Ladies Group also walked the parade proudly in celebration of the Suffrage movement - 100 years on from women being given the right to vote.

Gala chairwoman Catherine Towers said: “The gala was once again incredibly well supported and we all had a glorious day despite the torrential rain. Next year we celebrate our 50th gala and preparation is already underway - we are hoping to bring back together as many gala queens for the special event.”
