Game review: The Bridge Project

Bridges have been around for years now, and as I drive or walk over them I sometimes wonder “how did they build this?” and in some cases “Why did they build this?” well my prayers have been answered, sort of, with the release of The Bridge Project on PC and Mac.

The Bridge Project “does exactly what it says on the box” it is of course another simulator.

Developed by Caipirinha Games and Halycon Media, The Bridge Project may look simple and perhaps a tad boring, but to your average gamer it is actually a good game to play.

With forty eight different levels consisting of different towns, canyons and rural areas and a number of difficulty modes, The Bridge Project is a real mental challenge and had me hooked in no time.

Okay, the graphics aren’t spectacular but this game isn’t about the graphics, it’s more the physics.

You are given the task of building a bridge across a number of different gaps in the environment; it could be in a city centre or in the middle of a desert, and like any building project you are given a budget and a variety of materials to use, the rest is up to your imagination.

I soon realised after a couple of levels that building bridges is not that easy, building a bridge across a canyon with a limited amount of materials is fine if no one goes near it, yet The Bridge Project is having none of that, so you have the added challenge of knowing the game is going to be adding vehicles including boats (yes you have to build over busy waterways) and that’s where another fun element comes in, when you have completed your masterpiece the game then tests the structure and throws a few cars or buses into the mix, even bad weather, tanks, trains and a few boats, the actual bridge failures are very entertaining with buses falling off your bridge willy nilly.

The Bridge Project has an online global ranking system where you can post your best scores and compare your skills with other players. However, looking at the scores on there I think either some of the world’s greatest engineers must be playing this game, or someone has hacked it, but to be honest this isn`t the most important element, it’s all about the bridge building.

As I progressed into the game the challenge became tougher with more complex structures and difficult environments, gameplay is simple point and click so it’s easy to get going; and personally this became more of a puzzle game, it’s a great idea for kids to help keep their minds active with enough fun to make it interesting.

Summary

The Bridge Project is great for gamers who like a mental challenge or if you want to try something different. It’s a simple game with some nice fun elements and the price is right, it’s not a top end game and there are plenty of similar App type games around, yet The Bridge Project does have its charms and for the price worth a look at.
