Final touches to historic Winckley Square

This will complete the improvement project to the historic area following its £1.2m restoration backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Most of the project was undertaken in 2016, but these final key elements can only be carried out in dry weather.

The main work to be carried out by Barton Grange includes adding more drainage on the main field and low lying areas; seeding, fertilising and top dressing of the main field area; and cultivation of a few unmade areas that were too wet throughout the winter.

Adrian Phillips, Preston Council’s director of environment, said: “Winckley Square is one of the finest examples of a Georgian Square in the North of England, and with the recent development is now growing in popularity.

“These final, minor works will look to boost this part of the city centre even further.”

Simon Turner, director and co-founder of the Winckley Square Community Interest Company (WSCIC), added: “With drier conditions, we are now able to make some finishing touches to the Square.

“The feedback so far has been incredible with more people using the Square than ever before.

“We are overjoyed at the transformation of Winckley Square and we are looking forward to these final improvements being implemented.”

The planned works are the final components to the main contract, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, Preston Business Improvement District (BID) and Preston City Council in partnership with the Winckley Square CIC, LCC and Groundwork.

The work will take approximately seven days to complete.
