Array of walking tours featuring the extraordinary women of Winckley Square

Edith Rigby, Preston’s most famous suffragette, will also be honoured with a tour around the square with stories from her life.

The Friends of Winckley Square is hosting the walks. Chairman Patricia Harrison said: “Cornelia Connelly is one of the women people will hear about. She was a wife, the mother of five children and a nun who founded the religious order The Society of Holy Child Jesus and established the Holy Child Jesus Convent School in Winckley Square. She was a truly remarkable woman who had a significant impact on education in Preston.

“Her motto was actions not words which seems to be the mantra by which she led her life.”

Other walking tours planned for September 8 and 9 include a talk about the gardens and how the surrounding areas have changed over the years and stories of the former residents of the square - famous and infamous.

Over the last year The Friends of Winckley Square have been running regular guided walks. Patricia said: “Hundreds of people have been on the walks and we have had many requests to add more walks with a different focus so for the very first time we will be offering three new guided walks along with the former residents walk that has proved to be so popular.”

All walks start in the centre of the gardens at the square.
