Thomas set for date with destiny

Preston rowing star Graeme Thomas is just one race away from guaranteeing his place at the 2016 Olympic Games.

The 27-year-old is one of the favourites to win the 2km single scull final at the Team GB Olympic trials, which is taking place at the Redgrave-Pinsent Rowing Lake in Caversham on Wednesday.

In his time trial yesterday, Thomas recorded the sixth fastest mark to qualify for the semi-finals.

He then upped his performance to clock a time of 7:12.02 to finish second in the first semi-final – less than two seconds slower than race winner Angus Groom.

The winner of the second semi – Alan Campbell – was more than five seconds slower than Thomas.

The trio along with fellow qualifiers John Collins, Sam Townsend and Jonny Walton will go head to head today.
