The Preston and District Veterans’ Snooker League brought the curtain down on their season with the final of the Richard Smith Knockout Cup competition.

The league celebrates its silver jubilee status this year.

The holders Elite Snooker A defended the trophy against St Anthony’s.

But on this occasion it was the Catholic club who won the day by the narrowest of margins.

The teams shared the first two frames but it was St Anthony’s who went into the final two frames 38 points ahead.

And, despite a valiant effort by Elite’s captain Dennis Wilkinson, who beat his opposite number Peter Hardman 54-36, it was St Anthony’s who prevailed 297-269.

In the presentations that followed it was a season of success for the
Longton Bowling Club, with both teams winning their respective Divisions,
the B team joining their A team in Division One next season.

Hoole Village Hall are relegated after one season in the top division.
