The annual competition is for junior members at the Fulwood Hall Lane-based club and bears the name of Australian golfer Adam Scott who won the US Masters in 2013 and finished runner-up at the Open in 2012.

Scott visited the club in the early 2000s, delivering a demonstration to the young members at the club.

That gave him the idea to donate a trophy and have a competition for juniors.

It has been running for 13 years and always sees a high standard of play.

Scott has family links in Lancashire, with his uncle Dick Doleman a long-time member at Preston until a few years ago.

The golf ace devised the format of the tournament.

A series of competitive qualifying rounds produced six finalists – Cotterill, Hary Tierney, Amy Fletcher, James Nelson, Jack Hughes and James Fowler.

Before tee-off, junior captain Harry Tierney read a letter from Scott which congratulated them on reaching the final and wishing them luck on the day.

For the first time in the event, the competitors were allowed caddies.

Those roles were filled by family and friends, with it proving a great success.

The 18 holes were closely contested, with Cotterill winning by two strokes.

He shot a net par round to become the first back-to-back winner, having won it last year.

The 17-year-old is the only player to have won the trophy twice in its history.

In his winner’s speech, Cotterill thanked caddie Tony Cowperthwaite for his help in tackling the course.

He also paid tribute to Adam Scott for his continued support of the competition over the years.

Prizes for the event were provided by Titleist.

It has been a big year for Preston Golf Club, with them hosting the Lancashire round of the Trilby Trophy in June.

An England v Spain Under-16s international was also played there.
