The under-pressure boss has left Villa Park after fans made their feelings known towards Bruce during an eventful clash with the Lilywhites on Tuesday night.

One fan went as far as to throw a cabbage at him ahead of the game with supporters then calling for the manager to go during the match.

Bruce’s departure comes two years to the day since his predecessor Roberto Di Matteo was dismissed after his Villa side lost 2-0 to PNE at Deepdale.

Coaches Colin Calderwood, Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Gary Walsh have also been dismissed with immediate effect.

A club statement said: “We would like to place on record our gratitude to Steve and his team for their hard work and commitment.

"We wish them well for the future.

“The process of recruiting a new manager has begun. In the meantime, Kevin MacDonald, Aston Villa U23s manager, will be in charge of the team for our trip to Millwall on Saturday.”

Villa are currently 12th in the Championship.
