Alex Neil revealed that a trip to see a specialist on Friday showed that the midfielder's thigh problem will only sideline him for four to six weeks.

The PNE boss had expected far worse news, DJ's sooner than expected returned giving all at Deepdale a lift with Callum Robinson limping out of the big 4-1 win over Blackburn on Saturday.

"It’s not anywhere near as bad as I first feared," Neil said of Johnson's injury.

"I was worried he was going to be out for the season because that’s what we were getting fed back.

"But it looks like it will be four to six weeks which is very good because if we were missing him for the whole season that would have been really concerning.

"He’s been a good player for us.

"Although some of the lads aren’t on the pitch all the time to have that strength in depth and have the options available when and if you need them can make the difference."

Robinson limped off midway through the second half having earlier scored his 10th goal of the season as PNE made a fast start against their Lancashire rivals.

"It's a hamstring but I can't say what it is or how long it will be," Neil said.

"It's only just happened. We'll need to scan it and have a look it."

Ben Pearson, a key man in the middle of the park against Rovers, also had to be taken off as he struggled with cramp, Neil confident he will be fine in the long run.

"Ben's not trained in the last week and a half," said the PNE boss.

"He had an issue with his quad so we needed to watch him.

"He couldn't train and what's caused him the problem today."
