Despite Horgan being on the fringes it is understood that as things stand PNE’s preferred option however would be to keep the former Dundalk man at Deepdale for the coming season.

Horgan arrived in England alongside team-mate Andy Boyle in January 2017 on the back of a League of Ireland title win and impressive displays in the Europa League.

Horgan made only five starts for Preston in the 2017-18 season with just two of those coming in the Championship, against Barnsley and Cardiff over Christmas.

He made a further 18 appearances as a substitute with his solitary league goal coming in the win at Burton Albion in December.

Further competition has arrived this summer in the form of another Republic of Ireland international, Shamrock Rovers’ versatile forward Graham Burke.

Horgan has kept in place in recent Ireland squads despite his lack of game time at Deepdale
