Heat tames Panthers as they toil in the sunshine

With only 13 players playing in 29 degree heat, it was going to be a case of how long the Panthers could maintain their energy to remain competitive.

In early exchanges, the two teams looked evenly-matched and the Panthers, looking comfortable on the ball, defended well. Although Moorfield crossed the line for two early tries, it looked like over-enthusiasm could be their downfall.

Showing good character and an ability to give the ball air, Chorley clawed a try back with Joe Turner crossing in the corner.

Good hands between outside halves Jake Pass and Joe Sharratt saw Jake give a cheeky offload to level the scores.

Moorfield then scored again to take the half time lead 12-18 but it was definitely game on, and a shock was perhaps in store for the all-conquering Widnes side.

Despite the excellent first half performance, the lack of numbers coupled with the heat saw the Panthers quickly fatigue.

With the inevitable errors creeping into their game, Chorley often gave up valuable possession to the ever advancing Widnes outfit which contributed to the high scoring finish of 12-48 for the worthy winners Moorfield.

The boys could be pleased with their first half performance and hopefully build on this as they approach the summer break. Lilley was named man-of-the-match for his efforts in defence.

The U14 side just beat Woolston Greens 16-12.

Meeting for the third time this season, the Panthers overcame a plucky Woolston in sweltering conditions at Panther Park.

Chorley came out of the blocks quickly with Matthew Duckworth going over for the first of the game.

The next came before the break when the ever sharp Tom Greenhalgh, spotting a lazy blind side on the last tackle, fed Howard Hackett for the simplest of tries.

Woolston showed fantastic spirit after the break to narrow the deficit but Kian Langton secured what proved to be the winning converted try after great support set him up for a dive in near the posts. Woolstons’ refusal to throw in the towel set up a tight finish but, with just seconds remaining, a loose ball was picked up by the Panthers and the final whistle blew. Panthers remain top of Division One with just four fixtures remaining before the summer break.
