The Reds were without their keeper Sarah Skelton, so young Zoe Mather was drafted in from the second XI in her place.

Garstang showed their quality early when Alice Matthews and Josie Rice made superb interceptions and the former then had a shot on goal, which was well stopped by a Wigan defender.

Jen Moss was in the right place at the right time on the left-hand post to receive a feed across the D from Fran Summers to open the scoring.

Mather then left her circle to make a great stick sweep of the ball away, while Matthews fired a strong shot across the post, which just missed a deflection into goal by Di Roe.

At the start of the second half, Christy Martin was well placed to score from a Matthews’ pass to make it 2-0.

On 15 minutes, Rebecca Worthington broke along the goalline from the left and her pass to Roe just failed to go to stick in front of goal.

Three minutes later, Roe stormed in to the Wigan D and smashed a raised shot home to make it 3 -0.

With seven minutes to go, Martin broke past three defenders on the left and then lifted a beautiful flick over the diving keeper for her second goal and Garstang’s fourth.

Matthews and Martin shared the player of the match award.

The result leaves Garstang second in the North Hockey Women’s League Division Two North West table.

With two games left to play, the Reds have no chance of catching already-promoted league leaders Pendle Forest 1sts.
