Division One national angling champions 2017 Ted Carter Matrix cloaimed the silver medal when they represented England in the World Club Angling Championships in Hungary.
The national winners each get their chance to represent England in this world renowned event on the Szeged Rowing Course and Olympic Centre, the pinnacle of any competitive angler’s career.
The team based in Preston, but with members from other local cities including Manchester and Liverpool, were pipped on the second day by an emphatic French return of five section winners which saw them take gold, despite Ted Carter Matrix’s day-one pole-position finish.
Italy took bronze finishing in third.
Ted Cater Matrix captain Chris Gorrell said: “The team were particularly proud to be given the chance to represent England in the world club event and spent months preparing kit leaving no stone un turned.
“We quickly hit on to a tactic in practice that based are approach round in the event itself.
“The lads worked hard all week in practice and during the event itself, it was particularly demanding given the temperatures exceeding 30 degrees each day.
“We were delighted to have taken the silver but there is a hint of disappointment that we could not fend of the performance of the French on the second day.
“It’s the first time for several years that any of the North West teams had a podium finish in the world club champs and is something the whole squad is really proud of.
“It has been a successful couple of years for the team and right now we have a good blend of ages and experiences but importantly talent in the ranks.
“We’d like to thank sponsors Ted Carter fishing and Matrix for supporting us in the event, as well Sensas for providing us with the baits needed in the competition.”
The team is now preparing for this year’s division one national on the non-tidal reaches of the River Trent.
