Hugh Carthy still in touch after stage 14 of La Vuelta
Woods (EF Pro Cycling) pushed Wellens close on the run-in, but the stage leader had enough to hold on during a technical battle to record his second stage victory of this year’s Vuelta.
There were no notable changes in the general classification as all three riders on the podium finished in the same group, meaning Preston star Hugh Carthy stayed in third place overall.

Hide AdOverall leader Primoz Roglic attempted to extend his advantage over his podium rivals Richard Carapaz and Carthy in the final kilometre.
But the Ineos rider clung to the Slovenian’s wheel, while Fulwood rider Carthy finished towards the back of the same group to maintain third place.
Wellens said: “It’s not easy to win, I had to really fight to get in the breakaway, and all my companions in the breakaway were really strong riders.”
