The Fulwood rider was all smiles on the podium after his career-best finish behind overall general classification winner Primoz Roglic and second-placed Richard Carapaz.

Prior to this year’s Vuelta, 26-yearold Carthy’s best result was winning a lower-ranking stage race in Spain four years ago, and a stage win in last year’s Tour of Switzerland.

Pascal Ackermann beat Sam Bennett in Sunday’s stage 18 sprint finish.

It took a photo finish to reveal the winner, with Ackermann just doing enough to hold off Bennett.

Max Kanter finished third, Jasper Philipsen was fourth, and Jasha Sutterlin fifth.
