CYCLING: Hugh Carthy slips to fourth place in mountains

Fulwood ace Hugh Carthy slipped to fourth place overall in cycling’s Vuelta a Espana on Wednesdayafter the eighth stage from Logrono to Alto de Moncalvillo.

Primoz Roglic pulled off a late attack in the mountains to win the stage and reel in overall leader Richard Carapaz.

Reigning Vuelta champion Roglic staged a thrilling duel with Carapaz inside the final kilometre of the 164K stage and crossed the finishing line 13 seconds ahead of the Ecuadorian.

Roglic also earned himself 10 bonus seconds for the stage win to help his pursuit of Carapaz, who picked up six bonus seconds.

Carapaz retains the red jersey but saw his lead stripped to 13 seconds as Roglic climbed from fourth overall into second, knocking Preston’s Carthy – who had started the day in second place in the overall standings – back to fourth.

Daniel Martin is now third overall after a third-place finish in the stage.
