The Danish striker, on loan from Sicilian side Palermo, was handed only his second PNE start at the Vitality Stadium.

He responded by scoring a hat-trick to help North End see off their Premier League hosts after extra time.

Makienok was one of 10 changes made to the side by Simon Grayson who clearly had an eye on the forthcoming league game against Wigan.

Those who came into the side though, certainly gave Grayson food for thought, the win coming three days after PNE had been thrashed 5-0 at Brentford.

Ben Pearson, Ben Davies, Paul Huntington and Daniel Johnson were among those to come into the side together with Makienok.

North End went ahead in the 11th minute, Ben Pringle having seen a shot blocked on the line by Nathan Ake.

When John Welsh returned the ball into the box, Makienok drilled a low left-finish through the legs of goalkeeper Adam Federici.

Bournemouth equalised in the 54th minute when a free-kick from Max Gradel struck the arm of Ben Pringle on the end of the wall.

Referee Simon Hooper gave a penalty which Lewis Grabban slotted past Chris Maxwell.

With 15 minutes remaining, Grabban got the better of Davies down Bournemouth's right and sent over a low cross which found Dan Gosling at the far post to score.

The odds might have been stacked against North End at this point but they found an equaliser in the 85th minute to take the game into extra-time.

Chris Humphrey lifted a cross from the right-wing into the box which Makienok rose to meet and angle a header down past Federici.

Makienok wasn't finished there, completing his hat-trick six minutes into the second-half of extra time.

Eoin Doyle pass found him in the box, the Dane's shot clipping a defender and looping into the net.

After his season on loan at North End, Makienok joined Dutch club Utrecht but he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament soon after signing and spent the best part of two years recovering.

In January this year, he joined Dynamo Dresden on a short-term deal, scoring three goals in nine games before the pandemic halted German football.

Makienok is now with FC St. Pauli, based in Hamburg, having signed for them in August.
