Looking back: Preston North End's early-season cup joy against Crystal Palace in 2012

The Lilywhites were in League One in August 2012, with Palace a Championship side.

That summer the squad had been extensively changed at Deepdale, with a number of signings made to fit Graham Westley’s regime.

They clicked against Palace, this 4-1 win following up a 2-0 first-round success over Huddersfield, another Championship side.

All four goals came from new recruits, Nicky Wroe netting twice, with Akpo Sodje and Jefrrey Monakana on target.

Monakana’s was the best of the lot, the former Arsenal winger curling a delightful finish into the top corner.

Both teams had made changes for the game, the Palace side showing nine changes and North End’s six.

It took the home side less than two minutes to take the lead. Monakana powered down the left-wing and crossed into the middle.

Sodje, making his first PNE start, headed it down into the middle for Wroe to drive a crisp finish past Palace keeper Lewis Price from penalty-spot range.

A chance fell to Sodje soon after when he was played clear by John Welsh’s through ball.

The striker got a shot away but Price did well to tip it over the bar.

Wroe tested the keeper with a shot from distance, one which Price held at the second attempt.

North End doubled their lead in the 18th minute, Wroe’s corner met by Paul Huntington who powered a header goalwards.

It was cleared off the line, with Huntington’s follow-up effort blocked too.

However, the ball fell to Sodje who hooked a shot into the net from close range.

With their first chance of the contest, Palace halved the deficit in the 37th minute. Jonny Williams rode two challenges and crossed to the far post where Aaron Wilbraham headed back across PNE keeper Steve Simonsen into the net.

Four minutes before the interval, North End restored their two-goal cushion and in some style too.

Will Hayhurst and Andy Procter combined to win back possession and feed the ball out to Monakana down the left channel.

The teenager cut inside on to his right foot and curled a superb shot into the far top corner.

After the break, Preston continued to create chances as they looked to add to their lead and put the games to bed as a contest.

They succeeded in doing that in the 63rd minute with a move started and finished by Wroe.

It was the midfielder’s pass which sent Monakana chasing into space down the left-wing.

Monakana held the ball up near the byline before pulling it back for Wroe to run in and score from the edge of the box.
