The elite cycling race returns on Saturday, March 26, with more than 100 of the country’s top cyclists set to compete in a five-lap 116-mile race around the borough.

And people of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to get on their bikes for free scenic rides with the Sky Ride Local programme.

Twelve rides will be held this year, with the first at Astley Park on the same day as the Chorley Grand Prix.

British Cycling is also looking for “Breeze champions” who can help inspire more women to get on their bikes.

A free one-day training course will be held at Parklands High School on Saturday, April 9 for women who would like to lead cycle rides.

Coun Bev Murray, who is responsible for community development and health and wellbeing at Chorley Council, said: “The appetite for cycling in Chorley is growing every year and we are delighted to be working with British Cycling again to be able to offer our residents all of these fantastic opportunities to get out and about on their bikes.

“No matter what your ability or age is, there is a bike ride for everyone in this year’s programme and I would definitely recommend you visit goskyride.com/chorley to find out more about the different routes.

“The Breeze rides, which are women-only rides, are also great fun and a great way of getting together with other local women to enjoy the fantastic scenery our borough offers.”

Other Sky Ride Local rides across the county include a three-mile Astley Park Potter on April 3, a seven-mile Bamber Bounce in South Ribble on April 3, a 16-mile Guild north explorer on April 3, and an 11-mile Whittle-le-Woods circular on April 17.

The series of guided bike rides has been scheduled in every local authority area in the county for 2016, as part of a campaign to get more people cycling for fun and fitness.
