With the threat of rain not far away, the Emirates Riverside floodlights were on from mid-afternoon, but it was in the morning session when Lancashire lost their way.

Needing 325 to win following Paul Collingwood’s overnight declaration, they lost five wickets and it needed a battling, unbeaten 60 from Liam Livingstone to keep them afloat.

He put on 56 for the ninth wicket with Kyle Jarvis, who fell in the third over after tea to a nonchalant catch at short leg by Keaton Jennings, giving James Weighell his third wicket.

Graham Onions, previously out of sorts, trimmed Simon Kerrigan’s off stump and Lancashire were all out for 251.

There were three wickets for Brydon Carse, including two of the three which fell for seven runs in the morning.

While Alviro Petersen was progressing serenely to 24, Lancashire might have fancied their chances of a third win from four but, when Carse found a little extra bounce, Petersen tried to readjust his intended cut and steered a catch straight to backward point.

Then skipper Steven Croft flung his bat at a short, wide one from Barry McCarthy and edged to Michael Richardson.

Although they lost Haseeb Hameed to the 12th ball of the innings, lbw to Weighell, Lancashire had 46 on the board after five overs thanks largely to Onions feeding Karl Brown easy leg-side runs.

Brown had hit eight of his side’s 10 fours at that point and added one more before Onions finally hit the spot and had him lbw for 41, made off 26 balls.

Lancashire also made a bright start after lunch, taking 43 off the first seven overs with Onions again struggling for control.

McCarthy also dropped short too often, allowing Alex Davies to cut and pull on his way to 39.

He had put on 67 with Livingstone and had just about resurrected Lancashire’s hopes of victory when he drove wide of off stump at Weighell and edged behind.

Tom Bailey became the third successive batsman to be caught by Richardson when fending at a bouncer from Carse.

Neil Wagner was next to go, in slightly controversial fashion. He stood his ground when Jennings claimed a catch via his boot at short leg off Steve Borthwick, but the umpires consulted and decided he was out.

Livingstone, who had played very solidly, hit off-spinner Ryan Pringle for two leg-side sixes in the penultimate over before tea to reach 50 off 91 balls - but he was left stranded shortly afterwards.
