Knockout success for Kyle's battlers

The Moore and Smalley outfit are through to the last 16 of the prestigious tournament and now host Bamford Fieldhouse from the Greater Manchester Cricket League.

It was a third Northern League scalp for Kyle Helm’s men this summer, having beaten Morecambe and Chorley in earlier rounds.

Leyland won the toss and elected to bat first on their Fox Lane track but found the going tough.

They were bowled out for 115 in the 45th over, opener Karl Cross top-scoring with a knock of 29 which included six boundaries.

Richard Everett scored an unbeaten 16 after coming in at eight.

For Longridge, Rory McDowell returned 3-30, with Ian Simpson and Matt Greenall taking two each.

The visitors chased down their target by the 35th over, opener James Whitehead batting throughout with an unbeaten knock of 48.

For much of the time, he had Luke Platt for company in the middle, Platt hitting eight fours on his way to 52 not out as Longridge put 117-2 on the board.

It was a second victory of the weekend for Longridge, with them having beaten Thornton Cleveleys by seven wickets on Saturday in league action.

Thornton were 150-7 after electing to bat first, the bulk of those runs coming from Jon Eade who struck 76.

Eade’s time at the crease featured a six and nine fours, and he faced 123 balls.

Alex Mason impressed with the ball, the Longridge man taking 5-42 in 11 overs.

Like in Sunday’s cup clash, Whitehead and Platt featured prominently in the scoring, opener Whitehead hitting 56 and Platt an unbeaten 45 as Longridge were 151-3.

Vernon Carus stayed at the Palace Shield summit with a 25-run win over Garstang, who had started the day in second.

Put in to bat, Vernons were 143 all out, Christian Ash scoring 31, Craig Cameron 30 and James Fiddler 23.

In reply, Garstang were 118 all out, Michael Walling their top scorer with 24.

Joe Allen took 4-24 and David Fisher 3-26.

Fulwood and Broughton moved into second place thanks to a four-wicket win over Freckleton at Highfield.

Four wickets apiece from Chris Brookes and Arbab Munir helped F&B dismiss Freck for 131.

Charlie Rossiter then struck an unbeaten 63 and Robert Parker 34 as the home side chased down their target, posting 134-6.

Great Eccleston ran out winners in their clash with Penwortham at Middleforth.

Their victory charge was led by Will Thistlethwaite who struck an unbeaten 109, his knock featuring 16 fours and four sixes.

Thistlethwaite’s century helped Great Ecc post 237-9, a target which proved beyond Penwortham’s reach.

The hosts were 185 all out, Nathan Walmsley their top scorer with 41.

There was a 46-run win for Whittingham and Goosnargh against Fylde. W&G were 126 all out in the first innings but responded well with the ball, dismissing hosts Fylde for 80.

Torrisholme’s clash with Croston was abandoned just eight balls from the end because of a downpour.
