Garstang Ladies Hockey Club 1sts travelled to Merseyside to a seventh-placed Liverpool University, and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
The visitors started slow and never really picked up any momentum.
With the continued turnovers, the Reds were on the back foot and chasing the game. Christy Martin was keeping Garstang’s hopes alive with her dynamic and pacy attacks down the wing.
Her positive, attacking play nearly broke the deadlock when Rebecca Worthington came close to forcing an excellent diving save.
The University side played some strong balls up front and Garstang struggled to cut them out.
But against the run of play, Garstang finally found the back of the net when an Alice Matthews’ cross from the left was expertly deflected into the net by Worthington, just before half-time.
The Reds started the second half where they left off making life very tough for themselves.
The home side attacked Garstang’s area and the break soon came when some quick team passing play gave the students the equaliser.
Player of the match, keeper Sarah Skelton, kept Garstang’s head above water with some good technical play and crucial saves in the closing minutes.
Elsewhere, Garstang ladies 2nds beat Blackpool ladies 2nds 4-0 at home. The result moved Garstang up to sixth in the LCWHA Division One table.
