Matt Wilson scored on his debut as newly-promoted Leyland and Chorley Hockey Club men’s 1sts sealed a fine comeback to beat Bolton men’s 2nds 4-1 at home.

Leyland fought back from a 1-0 half-time deficit to fire four past Bolton in the second period and ensure they started the new North West Hockey League Division Four North campaign with a victory.

Wilson capped a fine debut by firing the ball into the roof of the net in the 65th minute and another new addition Mark Swann – returning for a second spell with the club – ran the show.

Leyland nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Craig Wilson released Mark Collier.

But the intervention of a Bolton foot denied Leyland an opener.

Swann’s flick from the subsequent short corner was well saved by the Bolton keeper. Craig Wilson pounced on the rebound but he appeared to be denied by another Bolton foot in the D.

The hosts showed plenty of drive with debutante Matt Wilson threatening on the left flank but Bolton’s defence thwarted their attacks.

And the visitors made Leyland pay for their missed chances in the 30th minute.

Bolton won a short corner and scored from their first shot at goal.

But Leyland equalised after the break in the 37th minute.

Simon Myers intercepted on the halfway line and picked out Craig Wilson on the right of the D.

He teed-up Collier in front of goal and he fired home. Leyland nearly took the lead straight from the restart.

Matt Swann won the ball on halfway near the right-hand touchline and picked out Wilson’s run into the D.

But the new boy failed to connect as he attempted to deflect the ball home.

Leyland finally took the lead in the 42nd minute as Collier set up the unmarked Myers, who ghosted into the D and rounded the keeper, before flicking the ball into the back of the net.

James Gallacher broke up a rare Bolton attack and picked out Myers in midfield, who released Craig Wilson on the right. He moved the ball cleverly to Collier who beat his defender and reached the by-line.

Collier cut the ball back to Matt Wilson and he smashed the ball into the roof of the net from five yards out.

And in the 65th minute Leyland completed the scoring Myers teed up Collier to fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner, his second of the game.

Elsewhere Leyland and Chorley men’s 3rds lost 8-2 in their opening match of the North West Hockey League Division Six North season at South Lakes men’s 2nds.

Leyland’s Matt Evans dispatched a penalty corner and 14-year-old Patrick Sullivan scored his first goal for the club.
