Sporting their new strip, Garstang Hockey Club’s ladies 1sts made the right impression in a 3-2 home win against Lancaster and Morecambe.
Josie Rice, Jude Chapman and Lyndsey Hayes were distributing searching balls from midfield and this soon paid off, when a shot on goal was saved by the L&M keeper only to fall into Di Roe’s path.
Roe lifted it high into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
Chapman and Alice Mathews teamed up well to earn Garstang’s second from a set-piece with Matthews’ shot just too strong for the L&M keeper to stop.
After the break, Garstang extended their lead when Roe found Fran Summers at the top of the D. Her strike found Josie Rice on the post, who deflected the ball neatly into the back of the net.
Player of the match Donna Richardson was solid at left-back, linking well with Mathews and providing lots of strong balls into the D.
In the last 10 minutes of the game, Garstang were caught on the counter-attack, and with a two-on-one situation, Lancaster and Morecambe made no mistake in punishing the Reds for pressing too many bodies high.
With five minutes to go, the visitors scored again from a penalty-corner routine but Garstang hung on to win 3-2.
