Wiles is aiming to '˜sign-off' in style

The former Blackpool winger is in temporary charge of the team this week due to boss Neil Reynolds’ week-long holiday in Las Vegas.

And one of his first tasks was to negotiate the club’s safe passage through to the last 16 of the League Cup on Tuesday night.

It was a goal by former PNE professional Josh Heaton two minutes after half-time which handed them victory over Glossop and ensured Wiles had some good news to tell the boss when he phoned from the States.

“The gaffer was really pleased with the result,” said Wiles, who is normally Reynolds’ assistant.

“He was straight on the phone five minutes after the full-time whistle. He asked me how it went and had seen the result.

“I think he had been following the game on Twitter and was over the moon when he saw that we had got through to the next round.”

Wiles felt his side deserved the win, especially after an excellent second-half performance. “The first half was a bit frantic – we could not really get a foothold in the game,” Wiles said.

“We had a good chat at half-time and I just told them to stay more composed and move the ball a bit quicker.

“We were miles better in the second half.”

This weekend, Wiles takes charge of his final game against Ramsbottom United at home before handing the reins back.

“They’ve had a couple of decent results of late, but if we take our second half performance into the game, I am really confident we will get the three points,” he added.

Meanwhile, Brig have an injury concern surrounding the fitness of Alistair Waddecar for the visit of Ramsbottom to the Sir Tom Finney Stadium. The winger was kicked accidentally in the ribs by his own team-mate Josh Heaton on Tuesday night. “Josh has gone to clear the ball but missed and caught Ally in the ribs. He was struggling with his breathing but we’re hoping he’s going to be okay.” Adam Dodd should be available despite missing the Glossop win with a tight calf.
