North End missed an early penalty when Jordan Hugill's spot-kick was parried by Latics goalkeeper Matt Gilks, with the striker's follow-up also saved.

The derby clash developed into something of a scrap after that, neither side producing any gilt-edged chances.

PNE boss Grayson said: "It was a little bit of an opportunity missed.

"I think we were the team who were looking to win the game.

"Give Wigan a lot of credit, they worked extremely hard and we always knew that was going to be the case.

"They pressed and worked us, we probably didn't quite have the yest and quality in the final third which we'd had in the last couple of games.

"The pitch was a bit difficult, it was our third game in a week, we chopped and changed to try and get something out of the game but give the opposition credit for making it difficult to play against.

"It shows how far we've come that we were making attacking changes and Wigan were making more defensive ones."

The penalty, given for a foul on Callum Robinson by Omar Bogle, was only the second awarded to PNE this season.

Daniel Johnson took the previous one against Blackburn but he was on the bench for this game.

Grayson said: "We have hardly had a penalty this season but Jordan has always been on them.

"He had been practicing all week, even after training I have seen him doing it a lot.

"He was confident in what he was going to do but unfortunately he didn't strike it as well as he would have liked to do.

"Matt Gilks made a decent save but I'm disappointed we didn't take the lead, scoring would have made the game a bit more open and given us the opportunity to try and win it.

"These things happen unfortunately, next time we get a penalty hopefully someone scores it."
