Triumph brings tears to Brockholes’ manager’s eyes

Brockholes Arms completed a league and cup double after a fantastic display in the Barron Cup Final with manager Jack Robinson reduced to tears after his side’s triumph.

The underdogs took the lead after 20 minutes ,David Jack’s long throw was flicked on and met by a glancing header from Mark Kippax to send the large Brockholes crowd wild.

Against their premier league opponents, Brockholes continued to hold their own and looked dangerous going forward. The game was more open but it was another Jack throw which this time took a nick off an unfortunate defender, nutmegging the stranded Theatre Boys keeper, 2-0.

Theatre Boys hit back, but despite having a good ten minutes, could not trouble goalkeeper Bryan Berry due to the steel and determination of a backline, led by man of the match Dave Porter.

Porter, playing in his fourth final, led the troops with encouragement and body on the line defending.

His younger teammates rose to the occasion and after showing neat footwork, Steven Johnson danced into the penalty box and was eventually hacked by a defender.

Credit to Johnson, he did not do six forward rolls, but stood on his feet only for the referee to fairly award the penalty.

Danny Ball stepped up and slotted away the spot kick and take the score to 3-0 with 15 minutes remaining.

The game was now even more open and with Johnson and David McEvoy running the midfield, a few hasty challenges flew in from a frustrated opposition. One of these brought Jack a free kick.

Jack superbly fired the ball with bend and dip, under the crossbar and into the net. Robinson added his thanks to all the players and supporters plus sponsors Royce and Gill Harker of The Brockholes Arms.
