Morecambe 2 Mansfield Town 1

The Shrimps secured their first victory of 2015 with a narrow win over a battling Mansfield.

Jim Bentley’s side produced an excellent first half to go two goals up but once Mansfield pulled a goal back, they were forced to defend stoically to hold on for their first win since the end of December.

The Shrimps took the lead on 16 minutes with Paul Mullin scoring his fifth goal of the season.

The home side produced a well-worked corner, with Jamie Devitt finding Shaun Beeley, whose shot from the edge of the box was turned in from close range by the teenage striker.

Morecambe continued to create chances with Mansfield keeper Lenny Pidgeley saving superbly from Alan Goodall before Morecambe added a second on 25 minutes.

A long ball into the Mansfield box found Kevin Ellison. His superb first touch enabled him to turn inside his man before flashing a left-footed shot past Pidgeley from eight yards out.

Mansfield looked sharp on the break with Vadaine Oliver forcing a smart low save from Andreas Arestidou in the opening stages.

They pulled themselves back in the game in the 27th minute with a well-taken free-kick by Simon Heslop who curled the ball over the wall and into the top left-hand corner of the Morecambe

The second half saw Mansfield dominate possession but waste a string of good chances.

Ryan Tafazolli and Junior Brown both saw weak shots blocked from great openings before Jamie McGuire was denied by an excellent Arestidou tip over with a snapshot from the edge of the box.

Morecambe were almost the architects of their own downfall with a number of poor clearances but they hung on to produce their first win in seven games.
