Morecambe suffered their first home defeat of the year with a shocking defensive display against Dagenham.

Jim Bentley’s side dominated possession for long spells but gifted the visitors three goals and three points.

The nightmare began when they went behind after just 17 seconds.

A ball was played to the right hand side of the Morecambe box which Laurence Wilson failed to clear and Luke Howell was well placed to drill a low shot into the bottom right hand corner of Andreas Arestidou’s goal.

Morecambe hit back with Kevin Ellison seeing a shot deflected inches and Mark Cousins saved well from Paul Mullin’s header.

But the Dagenham resistance was broken on 24 minutes when Andy Fleming scored from close range after a Shaun Beeley shot was diverted into his path by a defensive block.

The second half started in much the same way as the first with Morecambe gifting Wayne Burnett’s side an early goal.

A harmless free kick was pumped into the Morecambe area on 48 minutes but Arestidou got in a mix-up with his defenders and Aye Obileye was on hand to score unchallenged from close range.

Four minutes later it was 3-1 when veteran veteran striker Jamie Cureton slotted home a low cross from Hemmings from close range when the visitors broke quickly when a Morecambe attack broke down.

Morecambe went close to pulling one back but Goodall’s header from Fleming’s corner was cleared off the line by Joe Widdowson.

Ellison and Fleming then saw shots saved by Cousins before substitute Jack Redshaw showed them how it should be done with a superb individual goal three minutes into injury time.

Unfortunately for Morecambe it was too little too late and their hopes of back to back victories for the first time since the opening weeks of the season were dashed.
