Morecambe’s miserable home form continued with another below-par performance leading a third home defeat in four games.

Jim Bentley’s side were nowhere near their best on a poor afternoon and paid the price.

The Shrimps, who made seven changes from the side that drew 1-1 with York in midweek, suffered an early blow with a nightmare own goal from Morecambe defender Shaun Beeley giving the Grecians the platform they needed and a late goal from substitute Tom Nichols adding to Morecambe’s misery.

Beeley’s blunder came after just nine minutes. Arron Davies crossed to the far post and Beeley tried to chest the ball back to his goalkeeper Scott Davies but only managed to chest it into his own goal from three yards out.

From there it was all Exeter and the Shrimps had loan keeper Davies, making his first start since joining from Fleetwood for the injured Barry Roche, to thank for two world class saves to deny the Grecians a second.

He first produced a full stretch block to clear a goalmouth scramble before a superb effort to claw away David Wheeler’s close range header that was heading for the top left hand corner.

Morecambe’s only effort of note came in the 39th minute when Ryan Williams’s swirling cross from 35 yards out forced Christy Pym into a neat tip over. The second half also saw Exeter produce the better chances with Beeley making some amends for his earlier error with a goal line clearance from a Wheeler shot from the edge of the box after Davies had saved bravely at the feet of Jimmy Keohane.

Morecambe did raise their game for a period with substitutes Tom McCready and Paul Mullijn looking lively but the home side’’s first shot of note came in the 80th minute when Jack Redshaw’s long range effort forced a neat double save from Pym.

Any hopes of a comeback from the home side were dashed when Nichols took advantage of Morecambe’s lack of numbers at the back as they pushed for a late leveller. The substitute times his run to perfection and ran on goal before slotting the ball under the helpless Davies.
